Here is another great view from the balcony of my hotel room.  The Philadelphia skyline is just a small fraction of the overall horizon from here.  However, with the 70-200mm lens and a bit of cropping, it can become the subject for a great picture.  I am couting my blessings that it came out as sharp as it did due to the fact the exposure was made hand-held.  Much like Photo365-20100215 – Half Clover, I used the ledge of the balcony to help me steady the camera, but I would have been much better off taking the elevator down the ten floors to the trunk of my car to grab the tripod.

When I am lucky enough to get this room again in the hotel, if ever, I plan to take this picture again.  I would like to improve the sharpness and clarity with a longer exposure while mounted on a tripod.  If I am lucky enough to have a tele-extender by that time too, I will be sure to pop it on to get a little bit more distance from my lens.  With a a 1.4x multiplier, I could get to 280mm and would need to crop out a lot less.

Abstract Photography

This photograph is another shot from the balcony on my hotel room this week.  The fogged glass partitions between the rooms on the shared balcony often create these intriguing abstract light art at night.  I made sure to get nice and close with the Leica point and shoot so that the textures of the light and glass would show.  I finished the picture with a panoramic-type crop and a slight boost to the colors during post processing.

I saw this lamp hanging out, literally, in the hotel.  I thought it created a pretty dramatic scene when coupled with the wall paper on which it was hung.  I whipped out the camera and took a couple of shots to see how they would turn out.

I lucked out with a balcony on my top floor hotel room this week.  Better yet, it is the last room at the end of the hallway.  This is the view of the Route 73 and Interstate 295 clover leaf intersection.  I took the photograph using the ledge of the balcony as a support to keep the camera as steady as possible.  If I was a little less lazy tonight, I would have run down to the car to grab my tripod and used a longer exposure time coupled with a wider aperture.  Next time I suppose….

My fiancee and I had a nice sit down, away from the television, dinner tonight.  The final course was ultimate white cake from Wegmans.  It looked and smelled so tasty that I found it difficult to concentrate on getting a photograph.  I have been doing a lot more available light photography over the past couple of weeks.  I attribute this to laziness mostly.  Unfortunately, I have had a lot of other things on my mind lately and it has been distracting me from the 365 project.  With only a few months left, I hope to finish strong and put what I have learned over the last year to good use.

This is a picture of some of the aftermath of the previous days’ snow storms.  I stopped at the Maryland welcome center on southbound Interstate 95 tonight.  I just had to pull out the camera to capture this scene.  The snow was piled up to over four feet talk in many areas.

Snowy Wall

The snow is practically coming down sideways tonight.  Right outside of the hotel’s front door it is sticking to the walls.  The light shining straight down from the ceiling created this dynamic lighting on the textured wall.  The snow sticking to it added even more texture.  This was one of those photographs that I knew would come out great no matter how I shot it.  I am learning more and more that good light is everything in photography.

Visit the photoblog at http://www.cyberfrontproperty.com for the rest of the story.

It has been snowing like crazy up here in New Jersey for the last few days. As of right now, the end is finally insight. I ventured outside of my hotel room and outside the front doors just far enough to make this picture. The lighting adds a dynamic to the image which takes the boring tree in the snow to a more complex and interesting picture.

In post production I applied a softening preset to add a bit more “drama” to the photograph.
