The zoo today was amazing. The weather was beautiful, the animals were active, the crowds were small, and the primates put on a show. We were able to get all kinds of great pictures today. One of my favorites is this picture of an alligator (or perhaps a crocodile, I cannot remember which). This photography was taken through the window of the exhibit. I made sure I had the lens hood pressed completely flat right up against the glass window. This technique allowed from a crystal clear and perfectly sharp image.

Leila does not look too pleased that it is still raining outside today. It looks like she is still sleeping or just waking up here.

My fiancee, our two dogs and I took a ride two hours north to my sister’s place today to see my mother. It was quite entertaining to watch Buddy, my sister’s lab, run around and play with Mela and Leila. Buddy and Mela have met several times over the past few years. However, today was the first time the 40+ pound Buddy met the 7 pound Leila. I just missed a PERFECT shot here since Leila’s entire head is not fully visible in frame, but I love the clarity I got on Buddy’s face.

This photograph is one of my recent favorites. Often times my photograph of the day does not come to mind until we are all getting ready to settle in bed for the night. When this happens, Mela and Leila are usually very accommodating in providing me some good subject matter to shoot. Tonight, Leila was fighting to keep her eyes open to watch what I was doing with my camera. I got down to her eye level, which was not very hard to do being that she was laying on the bed, and got in tight to snap this frame. This one might have wall potential.

I seem to be taking more and more pictures each weekend of our dogs, Mela and Leila. I do not get a chance to see them during the week much any more with my current project being out of state. This photograph is of our schnorkie, Mela. I wish I had used a little bit of flash to make her eyes come alive. Even a small kiss of the on camera flash of the Canon 7D would have made a world of difference. Unfortunately, I did not review this photograph well enough on the back of the camera and left Mela’s eyes looking hallow here.

I was ready to pass out myself when I was taking this shot of our girls sleeping on the bed. The only camera I had available at the time without running all the way downstairs was my iPhone 3G. As some photographers say, the best camera is the one you have with you!

I took a quick shot of our schnorkie dog, Mela, tonight. I need to find the stamina to push through the end of this project. I will prevail!

I had a four hour drive ahead of me to get up to Seven Springs Resort where my company’s retreat was being held. I figured it was best to get my picture for today out of the way instead of putting it off until I got up to the resort and was distracted by the hospitality suite. My fiancee was not too pleased when I started to take candid shots of her before I walked out the door. However, she was a good sport and let me use this one for the project.

Today I can say I had my first real gig as a photographer. My friend asked if I could help him out by taking a corporate head shot for his boss’ web site. Of course I told him it would not be a problem and that it was perfect timing as I am heading to my company’s winter meeting to do head shots of all my coworkers later in the week. The setup for this shot was three small strobes. One in a soft box at camera right as the key, one in a reflective umbrella on camera left as the fill and a third gridded and pointed up at the background from behind the subject. It turns out that the intended fill light became the key. I guess I am still learning the ETTL and ratios functions in the Canon system. However, even though they got switched on me, I like the overall picture. The lighting is clean and there is good separation from the background. Maybe next time I will leave just a bit more head room in the shot to allow for future clients to be able to frame their images.

A self-proclaimed tech-geek, I enjoy anything powered by batteries or electricity. I'm not happy until I understand the full potential of any new gadget I get my hands on....
