Recently I have had less and less time to plan out my picture for the day.  It used to be that I would spend up to, and sometimes over, an hour looking for an interesting subject and then shooting it many different ways.  Over the past few weeks, I have been trying to find the little things in my every day life that I take for granted and shoot them quickly.  This bedside table lamp in my hotel room is one of those little things.  I turn this lamp, or one just like it, on and off multiple times each day during the week.  The texture of the lamp base has always struck me as interesting.  Today, I decided to take a picture of it for the first time.  No special processing was used to get the end result.  It is straight out of my camera.

This is what my setup looks like when I am crashing in a hotel during the week.  The Wacom tablet makes the trip with me when I hit the road.  The MacBook Pro has become my primary machine for both work and photography.  However, since nearly all of my company’s clients still use PC-based software applications, I keep a Windows XP virtual machine available.

I had an incredibly tough time getting the color balance correct in this photograph.  If I adjusted for the room coloring to remove the yellow tones, the screen on the laptop was no longer at the correct balance.  The version of the photograph above was adjusted to make the colors on the screen look right.  However, this left the colors in the room very yellow.  I probably needed to go with an approach of adjusting the color balance on two separate layers in Photoshop and then use masking to merge them together.

It has been a super long week.  I think this picture speaks to my level of exhaustion.  Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for the project.

Tonight I took a walk around the floors of the Marriott hotel looking for an interesting subject to capture for the project.  The vending machine on the first floor, outside of the gym believe it or not, wound up being my target for the night.  The single light in the vending machine offered interesting lighting on the bags of chips and other goodies found inside.  I enhanced the effect slightly by adding a vignette in post processing.

HIttin’ the Road

I was about to head out the door for another week on the road when I remembered that I still needed to take a picture for the day.  I decided to snap a picture of all my “luggage”.   Two out of the four pieces of luggage are strictly camera gear.  The two bags on the left contain my camera, various accessories, a portable light stand and convertible umbrella, tripod, and Wacom tablet.  I figured that I can never be too prepared for being able to take pictures and work on them while I am hanging out in my hotel room each night during the week.

I used Matt Kloskowski’s “The Cutting Edge” Lightroom preset in post.

Today I took a photo walk on one of the many trails Leesburg has to offer.  This particular trail ran along Goose Creek all the way out to the Potomac river.  I did not quite make it that far this afternoon, but I did have a nice hike.  Towards the apex of my of walk, I found this downed tree covered in mold.  The way the sun was hitting the log at a long angle made for some intriguing light.

I used another Matt Kloskowski Lightroom plugin in post-processing.  The preset is called Matt’s Wedding Fantasy and can be found on Matt’s Adobe Photoshop Lightroom Killer Tips blog.

DVR: The Business End

No thrills here in today’s picture.  This the “The Business End” of my homemade DVR.  It can record all four of the network television stations in full HD at the same time.  The DVR will also record one cable TV station in HD too.  However, the killer feature is the commercial skipping.  I am not talking thirty second skip or regular old fast forward like the TiVo or cable company provided boxes do.  My DVR finds the commericals and skips over them instantly while we are watching a show.  No wonder why I think I have an addiction to TV!

Don’t 4get Me

I was walking around the house tonight looking for an interesting subject for the project when I wandered out into the garage and found this snow shovel casting an interesting shadow.  The note my fiancee left on the shovel made it an even more compelling subject.  I had the camera set on aperture priority mode and the ISO set to Auto.  The camera needed to use ISO 2500 in order to get the exposure.  While I am still not pleased with the low light performance of the Canon 7D body in general, I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of this high ISO shot.

In post processing I applied a Lightroom preset to get the dark vignetting and orange-ish tones.

My fiancee was given some flowers on her last day of work by one of her coworkers.  I decided to put the flowers in front of the portrait backdrop and snap some shots with the softbox and reflector.  I am really impressed with how the shots came out.  This photograph, in particular, has some great tones and sharp details.  The purple flowers and the yellow rose are my favorite parts of the photograph.  The gray background does appear in frame as it was off to camera right at this angle.

Bottoms Up

To unwind from a hectic day at work today, I poured myself a small drink to enjoy while my fiancee and I watched some television together.  I brought my camera bag with me down into the basement in case any bright ideas came to me while we were relaxing (no pun intended).  I did not even get to take a sip of my drink yet when I thought of an idea to bottom light the brandy sniffer glass.  The glass coffee table top was finally going to be put to a good use rather than constantly getting dirty.

I whipped out the 430 EX II flash and set it up below the glass table top so that it fired directly up into the base of the drinking glass.  I do not remember if I was using manual mode, or if I was using ETTL with flash compensation.  More recently I have found myself using ETTL to control the power of the strobe for me.  I have found that setting the camera on manual mode and letting the ETTL system set the flash power has resulted in very satisfying images much sooner in my shoots when compared against having to set the flash powers manually.  I plan to continue working in both manual flash and ETTL flash, but I believe it is a good approach to know both methods well.
